Linda Howard can be hit or miss but with Duncan's Bride, she hits the mark beautifully. This is the story of embittered and embattled rancher Reese Duncan who, after a nasty divorce that nearly wiped him out financially, is struggling to save his family ranch. Despite his bitter feelings about marriage, he wants to have children to inherit what's left of his family ranch and to have a warm body to share his bed, so he places an advertisement for a wife.

Wealthy, educated city girl Madalyn Patterson is one of three women who answer's Reese's ad. Madelyn is living a boring existence in New York city and is looking for a change and a challenge and flies out to Montana to meet with Reese. After their first meeting Reese sends Madalyn packing, thinking that she does not come close to being "a rancher's wife." But he soon relents, calls her back to propose because he can't stop thinking about her. Although her step-brother and best friend dubious skepticism about Reese, they attend the wedding and Madalyn set about proving that she is more than cable of surviving the harsh Midwestern landscape. She does not allow Reese' to "make her pay" for his first wife's sins. As their relationship slowly develops, Reese nearly blows it when he reacts with a vicious accusation after Madalyn made a decisive and selfless move to save his ranch. She promptly leaves Reese and refuses to return until he convinces her that he is truly contrite and sorry for his actions.

I loved this book. "Duncan's Bride" is a definite keeper. I could not wait to read the follow up to this book, "Loving Evangeline," which features Madalyn's step-brother, Robert.

Duncan Bride Linda Howard 9781551664798 Books Reviews

Duncan's Bride is a story mostly based around the couple, his bitterness, her backbone, and the ranch. There are others thrown in sometimes- and I wasn't sure the story would be able to survive based off only them and the ranch. In fact- I wasn't drawn into the story at first- until Maddie became ensconced into Reese's life on the ranch.

Reese is an off-putting, sexy, brute of a man, with lingering anger/rage flowing through his veins, thanks to his ex-wife. I just couldn't see how Madelyn fell for him at first sight. His ill temper would have been enough to say peace out sucker!

However, Maddie falls for him from the very start, and as the story goes along we see what a strong willed person she can be. She was a good match for Reese. She certainly did the opposite of everything I would have done, and more power to her and her back bone! I loved Maddie! When something goes down, she didn't become a doormat, or forgive him so easily. Thank heavens.

Their story pulled me in, held me captive, and finally released me when the story finished, and I had read the book with barely putting it down.

I loved their banter of on going knowledge. That was my favorite part, besides the cafe moments. Lol

Over all I really enjoyed this story. It was exactly what I needed after a load of failures.

My only regrets are
1. something happens towards the end and we don't see it brought up to Maddie. That bothered me.
2. Her BFF falls through the cracks and we don't see her again.
3. I would have liked more of Robert. I really liked him. I know he has his own story- but still.
This is a 1990 Harlequin (I now own the large print, hardcover Chivers version from 2004), so the reader knows right off the bat what she'll find an incredibly rugged, handsome, alpha hero, and an incredibly beautiful, virginal, feisty heroine. In addition, the story's theme is Mail Order Bride, contemporary version. Out West, where men are Men and women are Little Ladies, Reese Duncan is struggling to save the family ranch. His ex-wife, a beauty from the big city, took him to the cleaners in a nasty divorce, and his heart and soul are now encased in ice as far as women are concerned. But he wants children to inherit his ranch, he wants a warm body in his bed, and he wants a partner to keep house and home while he's out tending the land. So he puts an ad in the paper. Madelyn Patterson is a beautiful city girl who yearns for a more leisurely and meaningful life. She already has some family money, so it's her inner quest that has her responding to Duncan's ad. It's undoubtedly love at first sight, but Duncan resists with all his considerable strength. He tells Madelyn she's not up to the role of rancher's wife and sends her packing. But, after reviewing the few other candidates, he gives in. Madelyn, who is a lot more clear-sighted, understands she's in love and is facing an uphill battle to break through Duncan's reserve, but she's up for the challenge. As these two spirited characters face off and develop a relationship, a minimum of secondary characters leaven the tale. There's Madelyn's brother (who has his own book, "Loving Evangeline"), Floris, the man-hating café owner, and that's about it. The weather also plays a part, from the scorching summer to the brutal winter, in which both hero and heroine face real danger. Will Madelyn overcome Duncan's distrust? Can the ranch be saved? Will true love win out? I give you one guess!
