I liked this book and the way it was written. I delved into a very touchy subject - rape - and did so really well. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I felt that the main character, Brooklyn, could have been developed further. She seemed very shallow and I didn't understand the reason she made some decisions throughout the book, so that left me turning back pages to see if I'd missed something and I didn't like that.

While not overly graphic in nature, it does go into some of the specifics around rape, and does have a dark nature to the book.

I did feel that the ending was also rushed and I felt that there wasn't really a proper resolution to the situation that was developed over almost the entire book - I was left wondering what happen to the boys and what happened to Brooklyn in-between the events in high school and then "3 years later". It can't have been that easy and I feel there was more to the story that could have been added - especially if the point of the story is to help women talk about rape - to not cover on the 'afterwards' and paint it as a happy ending didn't help that goal IMO.

SPOILER ALERT!

This was a bad after school special book. I have so many issues.

- the main girl is hard to like. She cheats on her best friend with her boyfriend while she knows her best friend is a rape victim. She also makes everything about her. She is not seeking redemption for her friend but to ease her own guilt.
- Ryan is 18 and states that he has slept with 6 girls. This is not a lot for an 18 year old boy nowadays.
- Brooke is suppose to be smart and a bad ass but it so naive. She hears "sex, score, virgin, etc" and can't figure out what's going on. Seriously.
- similar to the above point, what did she think was going to happen when she started messing with the boys. Please make no mistake, she did NOT deserve to be raped, hurt, attacked, etc. however she acted surprised when they attacked her in the poll and made other threats. Way too naive.
- I understand why she would have issues with Ryan but she needs to keep in mind 1) that she had made a huge mistake against her best friend. I'm guessing Brooke's cheating didn't help Beth's suicidal tendencies. 2) Brooke knew about Beth's rape and didn't tell anyone either.

I am glad Brooke pursued legal action against the boys at the end.
OMG, this was a very disturbing and an unsettling read, I would classify this as DARK. It has multiple triggers (rape, suicide, sexual harassment) so be warned. It is set in high school but all of the characters are 18, nothing taboo with older adults, but just the idea of this happening in schools is disturbing. The boys are popular jocks from money who used fear and intimidation to prey on multiple young girls.

Brooke...I had to keep reminding myself that she is 18 and a classic teenager. She is immature, selfish, foolish, narcissistic, and at times extraordinarily stupid. She made a horrible mistake before the events of the book that has led to an extremely guilty conscience. While it was not a century nice thing to do, I'm certainly not going to punish her for that, she seems to do that enough to herself. But her incredible guilt makes her decide to go deep cover and investigate a "Fantasy Slut League" involving multiple members of the swim team. Rather than going to her father, school administrators, or the police, she begins gathering evidence, talking to victims, and puts a huge target on her back. She knows she is dealing with a team of rapists who are drugging their victims, but she takes drinks from at least one of them on multiple occasions. Think Brooke!! And there are consequences, rather horrific ones too. I was very discouraged by her dangerous decisions and one early plan designed to catch them and punish herself at the same time.

Ryan...the romantic lead. The book needed him because without their love story It would have been a very dark read. However, again he's only 18, teenage love stories/sex scenes aren't my cuppa tea. But at times I felt that his addition dragged the story. I wanted justice and revenge more than reading about them painting and skateboarding together.

It took me a while to get through the book because there wasn't an overwhelming urge to pick it up. The last few chapters were gripping and compelling, but it took awhile to get there. It was well written, didn't get distracted by spelling or errors so I would give this author another read.
