I am a fan of Jennifer Echols (having loved Going Too Far and Forget You) and was looking forward to Love Story for months. I pre-ordered the book as soon as it was available and waited anxiously to receive it. But before I could read the book, I did something bad---something I never do. I read other people's reviews (usually I wait to read other reviews after I have written my own review). And they were for the most part lackluster. I lost my excitement over Love Story and could not get the anticipation back. I finally decided to read it for myself, and sadly, I agree with most of the reviews I read: Love Story is a good book but something was off.

Let me start with what I liked. I like the way Echols writes. I love her attention to detail. I love the way she builds relationships---they usually progress slowly, so that when the characters finally get together it means more to me. I especially like the way Echols writes teenagers. The portrayal feels so realistic and her books really take me back to my teen years.

While Love Story was a good read, it was nowhere nearly as good as Going Too Far or Forget You for me. To be perfectly honest, the first line of the story turned me off: I hate the name Captain Vanderslice and those initial feelings of dislike set the tone of the book for me. I know that's shallow and judgemental of me, but those are the facts. I never really connected with Erin and the "poor rich girl" act got old for me. It felt like it took forever to get some chemistry between Erin and Hunter---although I did enjoy their story, I just didn't love it. Something about the book as a whole felt lacking for me. In fact, as soon as I closed the cover on Love Story, I went straight to my bookshelf and picked up Going Too Far for a re-read. Now, that's a book I can get excited about!

If you are new to Jennifer Echols, I would recommend starting with Going Too Far or Forget You. Love Story was a good read, but not her best (in my opinion).

Love Story Jennifer Echols 9781439178324 Books Reviews

I read this book during the Mu Alpha Theta National Competition and hated that I only had a few minutes to read here and there. This book was one that I wish I could have read without putting it down! The friction between Hunter and Erin is beautifully done. It truly is a Love Story between the two of them.

Hunter and Erin volley back and forth in her creative writing class with their feelings for one another. It's a little like watching a ping pong match as the story continues. However, at the same time there are moments in between where their interactions hint at different feelings. Add in a crazy bunch of friends and the story holds your interest and keeps you guessing about what is going to happen next.

I will admit I was nervous about adding in the horse aspect to the story. This is probably one area I am completely not interested in. I have never cared for horse races, etc. However, it was a small part of the story itself so I didn't feel like I needed an education in horse racing.

One of the reasons I tend to be leery of love stories is because it seems many authors need some sort of tragedy to bring the characters together. I have never really been a fan of that type of writing because I read to escape things. I really liked that Jennifer was able to write a beautiful love story that holds your interest without a horrible tragedy that left me sobbing. There are may conflicts even after some realizations are made. I often get bored with simple love stories and this was not the case. The storyline was very complex as well as the characters and their behaviors.

For once I really don't have a criticism about a book. I really loved every part of it. I would also like to add that I think this story would translate really well into a movie and would love to see that happen. I give this book a 5/5!
So I am a huge fan of Jennifer Echols so that may be why I am so biased about the latest book of hers. Love Story introduces you to Erin, an overimaginative newly poor, ex-mikkion dollar heiress to a horse farm empire that has been given to the boy known her whole life as her stable boy, Hunter. When her grandmother finds out that she is leaving her hometown to go to NYU and not major in business but in creative writing, her grandmother cuts her off and reassigns her estate to go to Hunter. Now a freshman in NYU, she writes a story for her class assignment about an affair a rich heiress has with her stable boy, loosely imitation all the fantasies she has about her real life stable boy, only to find that Hunter has now enrolled in NYU as well only to hear the story and realize it is about him.
They go back and forth every week describing their emotions towards each other through their fictional essays they write for everyone to read publically every week in their class. I really like how that opens up a self liberating experience for Erin as she starts to show the real her in each piece of literary work she does, I also like how Hunter is always the perfect gentlemen and knows exactly how to get to her. I must say that just when I thought the book was starting to get some chemistry between the two, it just stopped!! Ended, finito, done!! Very disappointing!!!
I enjoyed Going Too Far and Forget You, so I was extremely excited to read yet another one of Echols' books. I was not disappointed and I only wish we had gotten more of Erin and Hunter's story.

I liked how Echols included some of the stories Erin and Hunter wrote for their creative writing class within the story. It made some of the revelations about their history more interesting than simply telling it in the main story. You still got their back story, but it was not only from Erin or Hunter's point of view, but from the characters they wrote.

I wish there had been a little bit more written about the class, the publishing internship, their relationship, as well as something more with her grandmother. It felt a little cut off and some of those loose ends weren't tied up enough for the story to be really over. I felt like there could have been another couple of chapters to really end the story.

I can't wait to read what else Echols writes in the future.
